Ventilation, flooring and acoustics: the gym fit-out details that matter

Three technical items separate a gym that works from one that gets complaints in its first month! ventilation sized for exercise, flooring that’s been properly specified (for its real use) and acoustic performance. All of these have a huge impact on the customer experience.

They are the easiest items to underspend on because you can't see them in a render, and they are expensive and time consuming to retrofit once members are paying. Having to close for a period to get things right after opening can also impact customer retention and trust.

Undersized ventilation gives you a hot, stuffy (and smelly) room. Under-specified flooring will fail under repeated impact. Poor acoustic separation will bring complaints from neighbours, and can affect comfort.

Specify all three at fit-out stage, zone by zone, and base them on what each area will really be used for. Fixing them after opening usually means closing part of a trading gym, which costs far more than getting it right first time.

Spend proper design time on this before the build starts. It is the easiest part of a gym to get right early, and the hardest to correct later.
