Community & business incubator spaces in reused shipping containers
St James Street is a community of start up businesses on a disused car park site in Walthamstow, London. The building provides affordable workspace and support for start ups with breakout social spaces, catering for events and pop-ups.
A flexible design allowing for business growth
The smallest units occupy half a shipping container - creating a very affordable start up space which has a shop window to customers. Over time, the array of different units sizes means that businesses can flex and adapt as they choose. With more established businesses occupying 3-4 container sized units.
Connecting to the public realm
A first floor covered terrace overlooking the street and ground level terrace are created for outdoor eating and drinking, and to increase the opportunities for serving the businesses. Together these spaces connect to the nearby streets and offers places to sit, relax and people watch.
Reusing shipping containers to speed up the project’s delivery
Formed from reused and adapted shipping containers that can be quickly established on the site. They are stacked and arranged over two levels with a continuous frontage of units around the perimeter. A variety of sizes and types of space is offered, by adapting the containers in different ways.
