Smithfields Market
London
2019
Adapting London's prestigious meat market into a centre for the creative industries and a world class arts and events venue for the City of London.
The proposal transforms the Grade 2* listed, former meat market into a 32,000m2 cultural destination. Completing the culture mile from Farringdon to Moorgate and linking a number of major cultural attractions including the Museum of London and the Centre for Music.
Rotunda Exhibition Centre
The rotunda ramp, once used by horses and carts to access the basement, is transformed into a spiralling promenade exhibition centre and gallery.
Multi layered and flexible space
The building is remodelled into a multi-layered and multi-functioning space. The ground floor houses a flexible events space for contemporary arts, creative industry exhibitions, expos and events. The lower level houses the creative industries, including workspace, conference space and fabrication spaces.
A productive and sensory past brought to life
A vast industrial shed of a building, the proposal celebrates the drama of its productive and sensory past, with opened up elements providing expressive spaces for circulation, break out and spectacle.
A new perspective of a Victorian masterpiece
Steeped in history, and playing a crucial role in London’s (trading) history, the market square has been at Smithfields for 800 years. Occupying the same space, once used for executions, but mainly as a place of trade. The covered market was built in 1866, and today stands in fine Victorian form.
