Smithfields Market

London

2019

Smithfield Market is an adaptation of London's prestigious meat market into a centre for the creative industries and a world class arts and events venue for the City of London.

The proposal reinvents the building as a cultural destination and completes the culture mile from Farringdon to Moorgate, linking a number of major cultural attractions including the Museum of London and the Centre for Music. The market is remodelled to become a multi-layered and multi-functioning space.  The ground floor houses a flexible events space for contemporary arts, creative industry exhibitions, expos and events. The basement houses the creative industries, including workspace, conference space and fabrication spaces.

The rotunda ramp, once used by horses and carts to access the basement, is transformed into a spiralling promenade exhibition centre.  The building celebrates the drama of its productive and sensory past, with opened up elements providing expressive moments for circulation, break out and spectacle. The project was the runner up in the Smithfield Market Competition run by the City of London.
